Lord Cranstoun was a Scottish Lord of Parliament, he played a prominent part in the pacification of the Anglo-Scottish border in the early 17th century.

He married Sara in December of 1580.

King james appointed him Captain of the Horse Garrison or Kings Guard in 1605, he was Keeper of Lochmaben Castle (built by Edward I AD1298) and Deputy Lieutenant of the Borders.

He had a reputation of extreme ruthlessness, believing in “hang first-try afterwords” which became known as “Jeddart Justice”

In 1608 he represented the small barons of Roxburghshire in the Convention of Estates a sister institution to the Scottish Parliament.

By a patent dated 19 November 1609 he was raised to Lord Cranstoun.

In 1611 he was promoted to Lieutenant of The Borders and appointed to the Privy Council
