
9th g-grandfather Rev. Henry Hammond 1605-1660 Youngest son of John Hammond physician to the royal house of King James
Educated at Eaton College, obtained the degrees of B.A., M.A., B.D., and D.D. at Magdalene College, Oxford, Endland (now The College of Saint Mary Magdalene)
In 1643 he was made Archdeacon of Chichester.
He was Chaplain to the royal commissioners at the Treaty of Uxbridge (English Civil war).
He was a prolific literary and ecclesiastical author, one of Hammond’s works was ‘ A Paraphrase and Annotations upon all the Books of the New Testament. A 1653 first edition copy was owned by Thomas Jefferson and is now in the Library of Congress.
One of the origins of the name Hammond dates back to the 7th century from the Norse-Viking name Hamundr, meaning “High Protection”.
