In the Revolutionary war he was a Captain with the 5th South Carolina Militia, commanded by his friend Andrew Pickens ( Pickens and his actions served as one of the sources for the fictional character of Benjamin Martin in the movie “The Patriot”). At the Battle of Cowpens he was a Colonel under the command of, now Brigadier General Pickens. He also served under Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee (the father of Robert E Lee) at the battle of Eutaw Springs.
He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1791-1794.
He was an Elder of the Old Stone Church, which is now a National Historic Site.
From 1796 until 1798 he was Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina.
The City and County of Anderson are named after him.
He died in his home on January 9, 1813!
